When in Hikkaduwa, make sure to visit a turtle hatchery, which is home to baby turtles that are either rescued or handed over by the villagers. It will be interesting to learn about sea turtles and hold a baby turtle to pose for a picture. You can see the eggs buried in natural sand enclosures. Once hatched, the baby turtles are raised in concrete ponds until they are old enough to be released to their natural habitat. Shailabimbaramaya, a quaint temple tracing its roots back to the colonial era stands silently just a few kilometers away from the town.
