Unawatuna

Associated with the great epic ‘Ramayana’, Unawatuna is a modest coastal town in Galle with golden-yellow sand, and a picturesque beach. As the tale goes, a part of the Himalaya mountain had fallen on this location while Hanuman was travelling across the Island to save Lakshman. Hence the name, ‘Una-watuna’ which means ‘fell down’. Priding itself on its biodiversity, Unawatuna is a top tourist attraction with turtle hatcheries, ancient temples, traditions and coral reefs for snorkellers and scuba divers. Now, filled with beautiful hotels and cafés Unawatuna is the perfect getaway to either experience serenity or indulge in its lively atmosphere at night.

The beach town is dotted with white washed beach villas, hotels, seafood restaurants and small kiosks selling delicate souvenirs. Unawatuna is also regarded as one of the 12 best beaches in the world. It is an ideal tropical destination to soak in the laid back atmosphere, sip a tropical cocktail and get your tan on. About four kilometers further south you will come across the famous stilt fishermen who sit on small seats attached to tall poles and fish. One of the off-the-radar beach spots in Unawatuna, Jungle Beach is a scenic bay hidden amidst lush greenery. There are some little sandy coves also. According to the findings of Sir Arthur C Clarke, Rumassala has one of the lowest gravitational fields on earth and satellites are rumoured to lose orbit overhead. When you walk inland from Jungle Beach and trek through the thickets, you can go up to the Rumassala cliff. Though it is somewhat an arduous hike, you will be rewarded with a sweeping view that captures the Galle Fort, flotillas of fishing boats bobbing in the waters and the mighty Ocean.
